Lisbon Airport (also called Lisbon Portela Airport) is located about 7 kilometres north of the city centre. It has two terminals, which are not physically linked, but are connected by a shuttle bus service. Now a busy, international airport, it operates flights to destinations around the world and has a range of services, including shops, bars, restaurants, car hire, bureau de change, and play areas for kids.

Portugal was neutral during the Second World War, and Lisbon Airport was therefore used by both German and British airlines. As the only city in which the Allies and the Axis Powers were both operating officially, Lisbon became a hub for exiles and refugees. Hundreds of thousands of people were smuggled in and out of Europe via the airport, which was closely watched by spies of all nationalities. An operation officer described the daily scenes by the runway as being “like ‘Casablanca’, only 20 times more”.

Practicalities
The airport enjoys good public transport connections to central Lisbon with both metro (journey time: 25 minutes) and bus services.
