What to see
According to legend, Lisbon, like Rome, is piled up on seven hills – but nowadays the modern city sprawls over a much larger area. The centre of Lisbon covers a handful of charming, traditional neighbourhoods which together comprise the city’s historic heart. They include the piquant district of the Bairro Alto, a warren of narrow streets piled high on a hilltop which is famous for its nightlife and Fado houses, as well as the adjoining neighbourhood of Chiado, with its arty cafés and galleries. Ancient Carmo still boasts Roman remains, and is home to the famous Elevator of Santa Justa, which offers stunning panoramic views. Baixa is Lisbon’s main shopping district, and contains the famous Praça do Rossio (Rossio Square).
Local vibe
Each of Lisbon's districts has a distinct feel, from the alternative vibe of the Bairro Alto, to the upscale shops and restaurants along the swanky Avenida da Liberdade.
Practicalities
The best way to get around Lisbon is by tram – the no.28 tram line is an attraction in itself. The famous Elevadores (funicular railways and an elevator) will also take the slog out of getting up the city’s hills. There’s also a good local bus network.
