What to see
Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world, with a history which stretches back thousands of years. The historic heart of Lisbon’s Old Town is spread around the hilltop Castle of São Jorge, a Moorish fortress built over the remnants of Celtic, Phoenician, Greek, Roman and Visigothic dwellings and fortifications which date back to around 1200 BC. The twisting lanes of the Alfama neighbourhood, Lisbon’s oldest, have changed little since they were laid out under the Moors a thousand years ago. Neighbouring districts, like the Bairro Alto, an enchanting warren of narrow streets which is now famous for its Fado houses and nightlife, and chic, arty Chiado, with its historic cafés and trendy galleries, also form part of the city’s historic centre. Chiado is linked with the Baixa (downtown) district by the famous Elevador de Santa Justa, a marvelous century-old vertical lift which has become a popular tourist attraction. The Baixa district was badly damaged in the terrible earthquake of 1755 which flattened much of the city, and was rebuilt in elegant Neoclassical style in the latter half of the 18th century. Now it’s Lisbon’s main shopping and business district, packed with chic boutiques and cafés.
Local vibe
Although one of the poorest districts in the city, Lisbon’s Old Town is alluring and picturesque, a maze of narrow lanes spilling down steep hillsides. The Bairro Alto and Alfama neighbourhoods are well known for vibrant nightlife and traditional Fado houses, while Chiado has a more laid-back vibe, and is full of stylish cafés and art galleries. These areas are often quiet by day, but get packed at night. The bustling Baixa district is busy day and night, thanks to its wide range of shops, bars and cafés.
Practicalities
One of the best ways to visit Lisbon’s Old Town is by hopping on the famous no.28 tram which trundles through the city’s oldest neighbourhoods.
